Mirena Lawsuits & IUD Side Effects

Women throughout St. Louis have filed lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals after suffering complications from their Mirena IUD device. The contraceptive has been reported to cause organ perforation and ectopic pregnancy; both serious complications that may amount to surgery and astronomical medical bills.

About The IUD

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small, T-shaped device that is placed into the uterus by a healthcare provider as a contraceptive.

Mirena, Manufactured by Bayer, releases small amounts of a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel – a hormone found in many birth control pills – locally into the uterus. In addition to its use as contraception, Mirena is often prescribed to help treat heavy periods, as the hormone helps reduce monthly thickening of uterine lining.

According to FDA reports, there have been more than 45,000 adverse events reported. In some women, Mirena can cause serious complications, including life-threatening ectopic pregnancy – pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus — perforation of the uterine wall, and a serious condition known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).

Perforation & Organ Damage

One of the most common of these side effects is Mirena’s tendency to move from the uterus, through the uterine wall, and into other parts of the body. Typically this causes damage to the abdomen. Patients who have reported adverse effects cited incidences in which perforation or penetration of the uterine wall occurred.

If Mirena penetrates the uterus, the device can migrate to the intestinal cavity, causing further damage to internal organs, including abscesses, peritonitis, and obstructions of the intestines.

Ectopic Pregnancy From Mirena

In some cases, Mirena has been linked to ectopic pregnancy; a rare but life-threatening condition that occurs when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes.

An ectopic pregnancy is life-threatening for the mother and the baby cannot survive to birth (full term). One of the most serious complications is a rupture in the area where the ectopic pregnancy is growing. A rupture can cause severe bleeding, organ damage, and shock. It requires emergency medical treatment.

A long-term complication of ectopic pregnancy is infertility. Only about one-third of women who have an ectopic pregnancy are able to get pregnant later in life.

Allegations Against Bayer

In December of 2009, the FDA warned Bayer that the advertising of Mirena included misleading presentations and misbranded the drug. According to the letter, Bayer was in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Commercials for Mirena insinuated falsely that women who use Mirena will “look and feel great,” however the smaller side effects of Mirena include weight gain, back pain, breast pain, and acne. Additionally, the advertising allegedly downplays the products risks, calling complications “uncommon.”
